Abstract: Part I Communicate (To communicate is to "impart knowledge of; make known." Comminication is a key skill for any lawyer. For the appellate lawyer, though, the avenues of communication are limited. This section focuses on best practices in communication with the appellate courts from those truly on the front lines of such communications - clerks of court and judicial law clerks.) ... Part II Advocate (Advocacy is defined as "speaking or writing in favor of" and "supporting or urging by argument." On appeal, we typically get at least one chance to write and one opportunity to speak in favor of our client's position. In this section, we focus on those avenues of appellate advocacy.) ... Contempt of Court: Reflections on U.S. Supreme Court Case United States v. Shipp and its Relevance to Today Featuring Mark S. Curriden, J.D.

Abstract: Mark Curriden's presentation has been enjoyed by attorneys around the nation. During the first two hours Mr. Curriden provides a discussion of the case of Ed Johnson, a 1906 trial of a young black man from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who was wrongfully convicted of the rape of a white woman. His appeal to the Supreme Court won him a stay of execution, but it did not stop Sheriff Shipp of Chattanooga and a local mob from lynching Mr. Johnson. Based upon the actions of Shipp and the mob, the Supreme Court initiated contempt proceedings in the case of United States v. Shipp. This case changed the state and federal legal systems, as we know them today. Mr. Curriden's book, Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching that Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism, is the program materials. Mark Curriden's presentation is followed by a 60-minute panel discussion of issues presented and suggested by this historic case. Mark Curriden is joined by Wade M. Smith and a distinguished panel of North Carolina Lawyers.

Abstract: Mark Curriden's presentation has been enjoyed by attorneys around the nation. During the first two hours Mr. Curriden provides a discussion of the case of Ed Johnson, a 1906 trial of a young black man from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who was wrongfully convicted of the rape of a white woman. His appeal to the Supreme Court won him a stay of execution, but it did not stop Sheriff Shipp of Chattanooga and a local mob from lynching Mr. Johnson. Based upon the actions of Shipp and the mob, the Supreme Court initiated contempt proceedings in the case of United States v. Shipp. This case changed the state and federal legal systems, as we know them today. Mr. Curriden's book, Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching that Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism, is the program materials. Abstract: Mark Curriden's presentation has been enjoyed by attorneys around the nation. During the first two hours Mr. Curriden provides a discussion of the case of Ed Johnson, a 1906 trial of a young black man from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who was wrongfully convicted of the rape of a white woman. His appeal to the Supreme Court won him a stay of execution, but it did not stop Sheriff Shipp of Chattanooga and a local mob from lynching Mr. Johnson. Based upon the actions of Shipp and the mob, the Supreme Court initiated contempt proceedings in the case of United States v. Shipp. This case changed the state and federal legal systems, as we know them today. Mr. Curriden's book, Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching that Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism, is the program materials. Mark Curriden's presentation is followed by a 60-minute panel discussion of issues presented and suggested by this historic case. Mark Curriden is joined by Wade M. Smith and a distinguished panel of North Carolina Lawyers.
